You'll see more states start Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) to combat prescription drug abuse and diversion.
Rx drug abuse is on the rise. Some teens say it's easier to get a Vicodin than a beer. And the 26,000 plus deaths per year from drug overdoses are second only to deaths from vehicle accidents.
PDMPs can be a big help...to check if patients are getting controlled substances from other prescribers and pharmacies.
State PDMPs log Rxs dispensed for controlled substances.
Most state programs log Schedule II, III, and IV Rxs. Some also keep track of Schedule Vs, tramadol, carisoprodol, etc.
A few states are starting to exchange info with each other. Eventually you'll see a nationwide "hub" to share info.
You'll usually access the info online...and will need the patient's name, date of birth, and sometimes an address or other info.
Some programs will eventually have "push" reporting...to push dispensing info into the patient file at the prescriber's office.
Keep the systems' limitations in mind...Rxs that are filled but never picked up can still show up in the system. Errors also result from misspelled names, wrong birth dates, stolen IDs, etc.
States are tracking to see if these programs reduce diversion.
Stay within your company's policies. Some restrict internet access. The Veterans Admin usually doesn't allow employees to access info on vets. Authorities will rethink these restrictions as PDMPs become more commonplace.
