Teaching Clinical Problem Solving: Instructing, Modeling, Coaching, and Facilitating

The goal of this activity is to help pharmacist preceptors develop a better knowledge and skills base to teach students clinical problem-solving skills...through instruction, modeling, coaching and facilitating. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Define the four roles of the preceptor in teaching clinical problem solving.
2. Explain the importance of considering a learner's needs at different stages in the educational process (e.g., student, resident, etc).
3. List methods to identify the appropriate teaching role for different clinical teaching situations.
4. Identify strategies to efficiently incorporate teaching into the patient care process.

Handling Difficult Learning Situations

The goal of this activity is to help pharmacist preceptors develop a better knowledge and skills base to handle difficult learning situations. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Identify common difficult learning situations that may arise in experiential education.
2. List student and preceptor factors that may contribute to difficult learning situations.
3. Summarize strategies to for early intervention and prevention of preceptor and learner conflicts.
4. Discuss strategies to help students improve attitude and motivation in the experiential environment.
5. Discuss methods to communicate and provide evaluation and feedback in a difficult learning situation.

Literature Evaluation and Biostats Review for Preceptors

The goal of this activity is to help pharmacist preceptors develop a better knowledge and skills base to teach clinical literature evaluation and conduct journal club sessions in experiential teaching. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Identify strategies for evaluating the medical literature.
2. List common clinical study design flaws.
3. Discuss the role of “patient-oriented evidence that matters” (POEMs) and “disease-oriented evidence” (DOE) in forming clinical practice recommendations.
4. Identify examples of significant teaching points in recent clinical studies.
5. Discuss strategies for conducting and evaluating journal club sessions with experiential students.
